🍲🍠 Let’s Feast…Peruvian Style! 🥣🥘

Why do you like to travel?

Do you like to discover new things? Or do you travel to learn more about yourself and the world around you? Or is it because you like being exposed to new places, people, cultures? Travel is a great way to develop a wider world view. It helps to open our mind…to realize there is no one way to live life. This is what makes our world a beautiful place!

When I travel, I not only want to “see” a destination, but I want to experience it. I like to smell, hear, taste and feel it. And this is why immersive travel allows us to dive headfirst into the experiences that allow us to do just that, and so much more.

Peru was one of my bucket list destinations and I am so glad I had the opportunity to experience the sights, sounds, sensations and flavors up close and personal with a group of friends! From Lima, to Cusco to the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu and more…it is a magical country that is steeped in tradition, culture, music, art and fabulous cuisine!

Most often we think of Machu Picchu when talking about Peru. Yes, that is one of the major highlights and rightly so. But a visit to awe-inspiring Machu Picchu isn’t the only way to explore the Incan culture. When traveling to Peru, there is no meal more traditional than pachamanca. This is a fabulous feast to celebrate the blessings of Pachamama and the historic significance is profound.

Pachamanca is a Peruvian specialty that dates back to Inca Empire. The term pachamanca in Quechua is a combination of “pacha”: earth and “manca”: cook pot; thus, “cook pot of the earth”. However, in the south’s Aymara language, “manca” is food, so then: “earth food”.  Both interpretations clearly demonstrate the concept.

Although this tradition is commonly prepared in the Andes, it can also be found in other areas across Peru. It is more than just a style of cooking- it is a communal social rite in which eaters enjoy delectable vegetables and meats that have gathered the energy of the earth, from Pachamama, the Earth Mother. No other style of cooking shows such a strong connection to the forces of nature.

The tradition of pachamanca is deeply rooted in Andean cultures even today. To celebrate the harvest and give thanks to Pachamama for blessing the earth, the food is returned to the earth to be cooked and the participants of the celebration eat from the earth.

It takes about 3 hours to cook everything…so settle in, because it’ll be a while before the feast is ready! The preparation starts by digging a large hole in the ground. The large hole serves as the cooking pit and is called a huatia. Next, you’ll gather rocks to heat over the flame; be careful to only choose volcanic stone that can withstand intense heat. Then, the hot rocks will be spread inside the pit to create an oven effect.

What will you be feasting on? The food will be added to the oven in layers—tough root vegetables on the bottom, banana-wrapped meat next, with corn, beans and additional hot rocks on top. The ingredients included in the feast may vary depending on the region of Peru, but no matter where you are, the cooking of pachamanca is a way of honoring Pachamama, the earth goddess or mother earth.

Today, Pachamanca is the centerpiece of many Peruvian gatherings, whether it be a local holiday in the Andes or a party in the highlands just outside of Lima. It’s a great way to feed a crowd, and reiterates the important tie between food, ritual, and people in Peruvian culture.

I’m sure you are wondering how it tasted!  Absolutely delicious!!! Now it’s time for you to experience Peru in an authentic way like we did so you can check it off your bucket list!

If you want your 2020 “Vacation Do Over”, let’s start planning your next adventure now! Peru included!!!

There will be limited availability in 2021 because many people “lifted and shifted” their vacation from this year.

🚘 📷Do GO Chasing Waterfalls!🌄📷

Michael and Lisa, September 2020

While those old song lyrics say, ‘don’t go chasing waterfalls,’ in North Carolina, it’s best to ignore this bit of advice and DO go chasing them. North Carolina has no shortage of waterfalls and amazing hikes to go along with them, ranging from falls that reach hundreds of feet to mild and temperate cascades with gentle swimming holes.

Waterfalls are a beautiful natural attraction in our little slice of North Carolina. The scenery of a waterfall is a great reward after a long trip to the mountains, or a long hike to get to your destination, and they are so worth it.

There are many fantastic waterfalls near Asheville, NC and throughout the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Favorite waterfalls appear along hiking trails, several roadside cascades, and can even be seen from the car.

We recently discovered 10 gems in the Western Carolinas. Sometimes the best kept secrets are right out our back yards. Take a look at the beauty that surrounds you! It’s everywhere!

SOCO FALLS and MINGO FALLS

There are two spectacular waterfalls on the Cherokee Indian Reservation!!

Double waterfalls are a rarity and this one is a hidden gem. Soco Falls (above left), located just a short walk off the main road, is a perfect way to start your scenic adventure. The falls sit right in between Maggie Valley and the Cherokee Indian Reservation.

Mingo Falls (above right) – meaning “Big Bear” in the Cherokee Language is located in the Big Cove community just north of Cherokee. A hidden gem hiding in the Smokies, the beautiful Mingo Falls is accessed by a short and brisk 0.4-mile hike inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Cherokee Indian Reservation. The 120-foot fall is always impressive, but especially after a large rainfall which causes the cascade to flow in full force.

JUNEY WHANK, TOM BRANCH and INDIAN CREEK FALLS

The Deep Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is known for its streams, hiking trails and waterfalls and is a beautiful area of the park. It is home to 3 waterfalls – Juney Whank, Tom Branch and Indian Creek Falls. There are two loop trails that take you to all three: Three Waterfalls Loop (2.4 miles) and Deep Creek-Indian Creek Loop (5 miles).  This is a popular area for tubing and gets quite busy during the summer months.

Tom Branch (above left) is located in the Deep Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  It is a simple, but gorgeous waterfall, that gently falls into the famous Deep Creek.  It’s the first waterfall you will encounter on the loop.  It is enjoyable to watch tubers go past the bottom of the falls.  You have a good view from across the creek.

Juney Whank Falls (above center) is divided into an upper and lower section. Both can be viewed from the footbridge which crosses Juney Whank Branch at the falls. Together they drop 90 feet from top to bottom. The stream and falls are said to be named after a Mr. Junaluska “Juney” Whank, who may be buried in the area.

Indian Creek Falls (above right) is the largest of the three waterfalls in the Deep Creek section of Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  The trail to the falls is wide, paved and mostly flat. You may want to sit for a while and enjoy the sound of the rushing water!

CULLASAJA Falls

CULLASAJA FALLS

Cullasaja Falls can be seen from the roadside on US Highway 64 (called Mountain Waters Scenic Highway & Waterfall Byway), 8.8 miles west of Highlands, along a very narrow, curvy stretch of highway through the the Cullasaja River Gorge in Nantahala National Forest. What a beautiful cliffside drive!

BRIDAL VEIL FALLS

On the way to the Highlands, we spotted at beautiful sight, Bridal Veil Falls.  It has been famous for generations as the only waterfall in North Carolina you can drive behind. However, the section of road behind the falls is now blocked off from automobiles for safety. This allows you to walk behind and enjoy it more. (The picture on the left was taken when I stood underneath the falls.) The 60-ft. waterfall in Nantahala National Forest doesn’t have a large volume of water unless it is right after a big rain. Therefore, it is safe and fun to stand behind it!

DRY FALLS

Dry Falls, a popular waterfall located a few miles outside of Highlands, gives you the rare treat of walking safely behind a waterfall. This 75-ft. tall waterfall in the Nantahala National Forest, flows over a cliff, allowing you to walk behind the falls and stay dry (hence the name). During rainy spells when the water volume is higher, the spray will prevent you from staying totally dry.

GLEN Falls

GLEN FALLS (a triple waterfall)

What a gorgeous place to view! Glen Falls is a triple waterfall near Highlands with 4 scenic stops along a 2-mile hike. The upper and middle cascades are the most beautiful. These falls are a great way to spend time in the woods relaxing and taking in the views!

Michael, Allan and Lisa

If you love to find waterfalls, then Western North Carolina is the place for you!!  Travel still remains one of the BEST ways to feel a global interconnectedness with humanity and in this case…nature!

Thank you for participating in Series 2 of our Travel and Wine Tasting events to Argentina, Portugal and Croatia. I’m sure you will agree that there is something unique and special about each country.

Which country is on your “bucket list” now?

For future Virtual Travel Events…I am working on where to go next. Here are a few that I have in mind…

Peru, Costa Rica, Iceland, Denmark/Sweden/Finland

These are beautiful destinations for all kinds of travelers… those that seek adventure, peace and quiet, small group exploration, or fabulous gastronomy.

Watch for the official invitation coming soon. The series may begin around October 15th. If you missed a past destination and want to watch the recording, let me know.

😎🌍Where are BEAUTIFUL Turquoise Seas & Fairy-tale Architecture? ✈🌎

That’s CROATIA!

WOW!  What a night!!  We had a fabulous time visiting Portugal (virtually) last Thursday evening!  My friend, Jordi Vilaseca, came to us LIVE from Europe and took us on an amazing tour with breathtaking photos! What a beautiful country!

Portugal is filled with exciting history, beautiful tile, cobblestone villages, idyllic scenery, medieval castles, captivating cities and golden beaches. It is also known for fabulous wine (particularly Port Wine) and gastronomy.  It’s all about bringing the land and landscape into every dish.  What a fantastic combination!!

Are you ready to visit Portugal?  Megan and I loved our adventure there and can’t wait to return!

Next Up:  CROATIA!

Croatia is BEAUTIUFL! Croatia is BREATHTAKING!

With piercing turquoise seas and fairytale-like architecture, there is no denying Croatia is breathtakingly beautiful!

Spanning most of the Adriatic Sea, you’re never too far away from the coast when traveling in Croatia.  And even if it’s not pretty beaches you seek, stone castles, magnificent waterfalls, UNESCO sites, and fabulous hiking await travelers of all kinds!

Here are 2 Highlights…

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, an ancient walled city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of my all-time favorite cities…. truly charming! It is filled with medieval stone buildings, churches, wonderful restaurants and boutique shops. You will also find the oldest pharmacy in Europe within the city walls. It is still operating today, and people come from all over the world to purchase their natural skin creams that are made from local herbs!

Plitvice Lakes National Park…

Plitvice Lakes is best be described as a paradise–there’s no exaggeration needed! From crystal clear blue seas and rushing waterfalls that belong on a postcard, Plitvice Lakes is the ultimate fairytale destination. It is made up of 16 lakes that are connected by a series of waterfalls surrounded by picture-perfect woodlands. Plitvice Lakes was the inspiration for my group tour in September, 2019 and I am so glad we saw it in person.

While recent events have kept us off planes and, well, on our couch, travel still remains one of the BEST ways to feel a global interconnectedness with humanity.

So, let’s use the power of our minds along with local destination specialist, Zvonimir from Croatia, as he joins us to bring this destination alive with a compelling visual presentation along with Q&A.

Warren Egnal, from DouxVin, will be sharing his expertise on wines that we’ll be tasting from a few regions. The experience will truly touch all your senses.

HERE’S THE PLAN FOR THE LAST TOUR IN OUR SERIES #2:

We have one last Virtual Travel Tour and Wine Tasting that remains.  We’ll use the Zoom Video Platform to present CROATIA along with 1 white and 1 red wine from the country.  Not a wine drinker, no worries.  Join us to be inspired by this amazing destination, with fun and laughter along the way.

Our final tour is to Croatia on Tuesday, September 15th at 8 PM EDT, 5 PM PDT with Zvonimir Androic, Founder of Via Tours Croatia, LIVE from Zagreb, Croatia.

You’ll see gorgeous photos and videos of the region and what you will experience when you travel to Croatia. After this presentation you will be introduced to the final 2 bottles of wine you were shipped, and we’ll taste, ask questions and have a great time.

A fabulous experience…

Here are Highlights of the Wine

CROATIA

(1) Vie di Romans Flors de Uis and (1) Leone de Castris Primitivo Manduria Villa Santera

The production area for Primitivo di Manduria wines stretches eastwards from Taranto, along the Gulf of Taranto coast.

The vineyards are located in a niche microclimate that benefits from soil rich in alluvial fans and minerals that have been carried there by glaciers over the millennia, as well as, the Bora winds from the east that result in large, daily temperature fluctuations. Flors di Uis is a fantasy term that in the Friulano dialect means “flowering of the grapes” and recalls the sweet, floral fragrance of the grapevine blossoms.

I, along with our special guest speaker Zvonimir Androic (affectionately known as “Z”), look forward to sharing insights and tastes from this wonderful destination.

If you have any questions about our event or future travel adventures, please feel free to reach out to me and to Warren for any questions about the wine.

Looking forward to seeing you on September 15th!

(1) 2018 Zuccardi Q Malbec and (1) 2017 Zuccardi Q Chardonnay

Zuccardi was just awarded the honor of: The World’s Best Vineyard 2020!

The Zuccardi ‘Q’ line represent wines of the highest quality made from the oldest vines, up to 40 years of age, grown at the foot of the Andes Mountains in the high altitude province of Valle de Uco of Mendoza. The rich climate and geography of our high elevation Valle de Uco vineyards provide excellent fruit ripening and concentration.

PORTUGAL

(1) 2013 Quinta do Noval Cedro do Noval & (1) 10-Year Old Tawny Douro Valley

One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. It is unique among top port houses in that most of its ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard.

Noval 10 Year Old Tawny is a blend of old Ports from different vintages that have matured in oak casks, with an average age of 10 years. It’s a perfect expression of the Noval tawny style. It has acquired the classic attributes of an old Tawny Port, while at the same time retaining much of the freshness and fruitiness of its youth.

CROATIA

(1) Vie di Romans Flors de Uis and (1) Leone de Castris Primitivo Manduria Villa Santera

The production area for Primitivo di Manduria wines stretches eastwards from Taranto, along the Gulf of Taranto coast. This area is one of the oldest DOC appellations of the South of Italy. The name Villa Santera refers to an ancient farm owned by the Leone De Castris family.

The cost for all 6 bottles ($215) plus tax and shipping ($25) is $240. There are only a few states that he can’t ship to. Someone 21 years of age or older, has to be available to receive the wine.

You must RSVP (Click Here) to me that you will be attending. I will send you a Zoom Video Link for each tasting. Not a wine drinker? I’d still love to have you join in. But you must RSVP (Click Here) to get the Zoom link.

Order by Wednesday, August 19th.  This will ensure that Warren can get the wines packed and shipped on August 21st, so you’ll have them in time for the first tasting. Shipments take longer to the east coast, which is why he needs the lead time.

Ship to states outside of California – Click Here to Order

I, along with our special guest speakers look forward to sharing insights and tastes from these wonderful destinations. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me about the details and of course travel and to Warren for any questions about the wine.

See you on September 3rd!

🚵🏻 An Adventure…Really? Where? 🪂

National Geographic Journeys Specialist with G Adventures

What is adventure? What does this word mean to you? Is it climbing up a mountain or jumping off a bungee platform in New Zealand, only to spring back up and down a few times? Is it surfing or riding a motorcycle? Is it backpacking across Europe with a group of friends?

Lisa and Allan – Bryce Cannon, 2016

While all of these adventures sound pretty exciting, they don’t define what the spirit of adventure means to me.

Think about it. Have you heard the phrase, “Life is full of adventure?”. Or how about describing someone as living “an adventurous life?” Does that mean extreme sports every day? Risking your life and pushing boundaries of what is physically possible for you?

Or does it simply mean trying something new. Exploring a new place? Getting out of your comfort zone?

Adventures don’t have to be dangerous. You don’t have to fear for your life. You don’t have to go shark-diving or sail around the world solo.

Adventure is all about attitude.  It’s about making the commitment to try something new or something different than before. It’s about taking a leap of faith or getting out of your comfort zone. It’s about willfully choosing to walk an unknown path. Now that’s the spirit!!

Adventure requires a certain amount of courage. Daring to step into that new restaurant in a foreign country where you can’t pronounce the items on the menu. Choosing to take the local form of transportation instead of hiring a driver. Booking a spontaneous holiday to a new destination with a new travel companion.

Adventure looks different for everyone. And that’s OK.  Adventure is never far away.  It’s meant to inspire and teach you, to give you a sense of fulfillment, to create memories that last a lifetime, to encourage you to try new things, to expose you to new ideas and thoughts and to demonstrate that through stories and experiences an adventure adds color and flavor to your existence.

Life is THE adventure!

Are you ready to spice it up? Let’s do it!!

I recently became certified as a National Geographic Journeys Specialist with G Adventures. They offer a collection of unique tours designed to take you deeper into the culture and history of the places you visit. They offer greater hands-on exploration, interactions with local experts, connections to fascinating people and projects supported by National Geographic and the freedom to roam, all within the structure and security of travelling in a small group. It’s a travel experience like no other.

Here’s the neat part!! G Adventures has private tours averaging 12 travelers with a maximum of 16. You not only get to choose how you want to travel but who you travel with. With their Private Travel options, you can take one of their tours and “Book Your Bubble” (Don’t you love that phrase??) to ensure you’re surrounded by friends and family for added confidence and peace of mind. Or you can customize a trip entirely for you! It’s your adventure, make it fit you perfectly — and safely. Plus, enjoy all the added health and safety measures of our Travel with Confidence Policy. I certainly think private small group travel is going to be in demand in 2021 and 2022.

There are over 80 tours that give you and your hand-picked crew the freedom and safety found on all of their private tours. And right now, there are some exciting special bonus savings that when combined with their Travel with Confidence Policy and Book with Confidence Policy, make this too good to pass up!

Let’s look at a few really neat “Book your Bubble” itineraries:

XOOM Tours – Croatia, 2019

Stretch out your vacation days lounging on a yacht deck with this sailing trip that covers the Dalmatian coast from Split to Dubrovnik, along with plenty of time in Montenegro. Feel the warm sun on your face with the refreshing spray of seawater as you venture from coastal town to coastal town, stopping to swim, snorkel, or relax on beaches before exploring the rich history behind this storied Old World region. Local food and wine are in abundance, giving you delicious homegrown flavor that’s difficult to forget. When it comes to Croatia, every experience is filled with memories that ignite all the senses.

Machu Picchu – 2017

Peru Multisport

How do you improve a trip that already includes the Sacred Valley, the Inca Trail, and Lake Titicaca? Throw in some bikes, a few kayaks, and loads of high-energy thrills, that’s how! Peru Multisport connects immersive cultural interaction and classic Peruvian landmarks with challenging physical activities tailored specifically for adrenaline junkies and fitness freaks. Climb and bike your way from small villages to astounding monuments, then explore Lake Titicaca from a kayak; a perspective few visitors ever get the chance to see.

Sri Lanka & Maldives Adventure

This 14-day combo trip brings together the best of Sri Lanka’s cultural highlights and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sail the islands of the Maldives aboard a dhoni boat. Experience a safari in Udawalawe National Park, discover cultural treasures of Negombo and Kandy, and then spend an entire week cruising from one tiny and perfect atoll island to another, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters and stretching out on blazing white-sand beaches. From culture to paradise, this tour has it all.

So which adventure is up your alley??  National Geographic and G Adventures believe that travel can and should be a force for good in the world.  And it is!

⌚ 💼 We Have One Life to Live! ✈ 😎

Santorini, Greece

One thing this pandemic has taught us, is that we have one life to live and that this is not a practice run for the future, this is it!! So, let’s focus on what is truly important to us, and DREAM of where in the world we want to go and what we want to get out of that experience. Are you with me? Are you ready to DREAM?

If there are things you want to do in your life, you should really make them a priority. Instead of waiting for “someday” or “retirement” to experience it, making a concrete plan is smart, and I want to help you with that!

Growing up, “traveling” meant something a whole lot different for most of us than booking a flight and filling up our passport pages. With 5 kids in tow, my parents would often just pack up our Ford Fairmont station wagon and drive us to visit relatives in a neighboring state. That was our version of vacation.

Our Family Trip – Atherton, California 1970

So, instead of hopping on planes, I explored the world by turning the pages of National Geographic Magazine. I poured over fantastic images of faraway places – places I could hardly believe existed. Those magazines inspired not only my love of travel, but my passion for photography. I received my first camera in the 4th grade and have filtered my world through the camera lens ever since.

“A picture paints a thousand words” and connects us to the people, places, feelings and stories that they tell. Just like this picture of me when I was in Thailand and this friendly elephant caught me by surprise and gave me a hearty elephant hug! Or when we ventured to the Andes Mountains to see one of the “Seven Wonders of the World” … Machu Picchu. I have vivid memories of walking along a steep, rocky pathway with beautiful foliage on both sides and then turning a corner and right there before my eyes was the most breathtaking view of Machu Picchu. I was awestruck! It was magical to say the least. What memorable experiences!!

Pictures provide us with the opportunity to DREAM, connecting us to the most magical places and experiences around the world and make us feel inspired just like National Geographic Magazine did for me when I was a young child.

So, let’s take this inspiration to a whole new level. My travel consortia, Virtuoso, has created an exciting way to help you, my clients, DREAM TODAY SO THAT YOU CAN TRAVEL TOMORROW.

Check out this motivating video below!

Wanderlist by Virtuoso is a really neat comprehensive global platform (It’s a really cool app.) that offers a fun, free way to create and share travel wish-lists. It’s fairly simple to use! You can explore destinations and hotels around the world, as well as unique and specialized things to do in those destinations.

Plus, if you’ve ever planned a group adventure for your family or friends, you already know how difficult it can be to please everyone. Wanderlist by Virtuoso was designed to make it easy and seamless (and enjoyable!) to DREAM together.

Here’s a screen shot of my Wanderlistl   I’m Dreaming of visiting Greece.

Are you ready to try it?  Here’s how it works:

  1. CLICK the blue button below for your exclusive invitation link to the “Welcome to Wanderlist” homepage.
  2. CREATE an account – it’s quick and easy!
  3. EXPLORE the world using the interactive map to find places, hotels and experiences that intrigue, inspire, and interest you.
  4. COLLECT & CUSTOMIZE Make it yours. Select and save ideas you discover to your very own travel wish list. You can create lists for any trip you are dreaming of. Whether it’s the time of year you plan to travel, the people you want to go with, or a special milestone celebration, organize your lists for a future of exciting trips.
  5. SHARE and invite your family and friends, and then invite me, your travel advisor, to share in the fun. Everybody can contribute and view each other’s ideas, offering suggestions to inspire the planning process. It’s more fun when you DREAM together! Your wish lists are secure and only seen by those you choose.
  6. PLAN Let’s work together to plan your next epic adventure!

I am hoping this will be a useful first step to encouraging future travel and I will never stop inspiring you.  I also hope it helps you connect with your families, friends and me around your future travel dreams.

We will travel again and creating your own Wanderlist will encourage you to learn, DREAM about and anticipate where you may want to travel when it feels right for you!

Until then, LET’S DREAM TOGETHER!

Where? ✈ When? ⌚ How? 💼 Should We? 😎

I hope you had a fun-filled 4th of July! Our family enjoyed spending the day on the lake, participating in the largest boat parade on Lake Norman (over 4,000 boats), grilling out and watching the neighbors set off fireworks from their driveway. My grandson and I also visited “Field of Flags” and were in awe of the beauty of 600 American flags blowing in the wind that were dedicated to and honored our local community Veterans, Active Military and First Responder Heroes – past or present. It was a fun-filled Independence Day.

This week I wanted to share about the many travel and destination rules, regulations, protocols and restrictions that are ever changing – day by day, hour by hour or even minute by minute. Special thanks to my travel colleague, John Rees, for letting me share some of the information he gathered for my blog.

Staying on top of these changes is a lot of what I do these days. Whatever your personal time-frame may be for future travel, I would bet you will have some questions regarding the current process and guidelines and I will have answers for you. Hopefully you will find this information helpful for when you are ready to travel both domestically or internationally.

So, this week I will feature 5 of the most useful online resources to provide you with as much detail as possible to assist in making informed decisions.

Here are the top resources that may answer your  Where?  When?  How?  Should We?

Caribbean Travel Advisories (click on the picture above)

The Caribbean is the first area to be reopening that is happy to receive visitors from the USA, but even that is not true for every island and just because a location is “reopened” there still may be strong enough restrictions in place, that you may prefer not to travel.  Aruba, for example, currently in a Phase 1 reopening, requires residents of more than 20 states that are considered to be of higher risk of Covid-19, must upload proof of a negative test taken between 12 and 72 hours of inbound travel. Island guests must also purchase mandatory Aruba Visitors Insurance to cover up to $75,000 in expenses should they test positive for Covid-19 during their stay. The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association are doing an excellent job of keeping this Google doc (click pic above) updated and they expect many restrictions to be lifted in time for the holiday season at the end of 2020.

Europe (click on the picture above)

The European Union is debating daily whether to extend the ban on incoming US residents, along with many other countries that have high numbers of Covid-19 cases. Croatia, for example, is opening their borders to members of the EU, but American tourists may visit only with proof of paid accommodations.  Meanwhile, they have put together a decent app (click pic above) that covers the entire EU and answers questions on entry, transit, trains and air.

Global Timeline (click on the picture above)

Skift has put together a powerful resource that collects travel news events and catalogs them by date and geographical area. You have to be careful to read the articles in their entirety as it can sometimes be misleading to go by the headline alone, but nonetheless this has been a great resource for me when searching for a particular country I have received little prior information on. They also have a domestic USA section which is important to be aware of if you are planning to travel between States this summer.

Covid-19 Checker (click on the picture above)

If you are concerned about how Covid has developed in other countries you may potentially be traveling to, this app will give you the true number of cases around the world, combined with the latest restrictions regarding the same country. A great tool to help understand any risk and keep track of global travel restrictions. Please keep in mind that some countries are definitely under-reporting Covid due to lack of testing. It is important that we talk this through should one of these countries be of interest. If you want to see who navigated this best, click on New Zealand.

Flights (click on the picture above)

The International Civil Aviation Organization has been top notch with providing data during these uncertain times. Their website goes all out on everything flight related and lists the number of flights from each country daily, and places them into sub-categories of cargo/passenger/repatriation. They also indicate the percentage week over week change for each airport. This is a very useful site if you need airport specific information.

So, hang on to these valuable links and let’s refer back to them when you feel the time is right to travel to your favorite destination. I’m here to partner with you to make it happen.

😎 Discover ITALY – from Home! 🍷

Before I review our upcoming Italian Adventure below, I have to recap the excitement from the European River Cruising adventure we had with 44 of our travel friends last Thursday with AmaWaterways!  🧳🌍

WOW! What a night!! We had fun learning about the many advantages of traveling with AmaWaterways — They are an all-inclusive river cruise line with elegantly appointed riverview staterooms and suites—most with not one, but two private balconies (a French and a full balcony)—that provide unique views of the ever-changing scenery. They use the freshest locally sourced cuisine which is perfectly paired with fine wine served during lunch and dinner. And you’ll be treated to a variety of small group excursions ranging from hiking and biking adventures to culturally immersive experiences, all included. So with all this combined together, it makes for a spectacular river cruise! Are you ready for this type of an adventure?

River cruises are the hot 🔥🔥 bucket list vacation 🧳 for many reasons:

  1. Smaller ships that sail on rivers not oceans – you are always in sight of the scenery.
  2. They voyage on the inland waterways – rivers – of Europe, Asia, Egypt & the America’s.
  3. Port stops are often the region’s oldest & most colorful villages & towns. 👍🏻

There are so many amazing itineraries!! 🌍

Guess what? We have many adventurous travelers that attended the virtual tour that want to go on a river cruise, so we are going to set-up a group European River Cruise in the summer of 2021! Think Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Linz, Passau…all those beautiful places! And on the AmaMagna…the largest ship in their fleet!   If you are interested, please send me an email, [email protected],  and I’ll fill you in!!  Keep in mind space is limited. So it is first come, first serve.

Now onto our next destination – ITALY!. With amazing art and architecture, unequaled cuisine (YUM!), shopping, compelling religious and historical sites, picturesque scenery and friendly people, Italy is a never-ending journey, a virtual banquet where you’ll find yourself doing things you never dreamed of – or always dreamed of.  This journey highlights Italy’s grand past, romantic cities and exquisite wonders.

One of my favorite things to do in Italy is to hang out with the locals for a more authentic experience. I like to dine in restaurants where the locals frequent, or walk through the markets to take in the sights and sounds of the hustle and bustle of their shopping, or visit off the beaten path historical sites or have a chat with a local and ask them about their day.  It’s also fun to go all in and take a cooking class in the home of an Italian family.  There’s nothing better than learning how to make pasta or gelato from scratch from a native. Doesn’t this sound like fun? You will be hearing more about these amazing experiences that are available to you.

We’ll be joined by my colleague, Valentina Losavio, from See Italy – a native of Italy to share about her beautiful country, locally immersive experiences, fabulous cuisine and the history and architecture!  You are in for a real treat especially when you hear her beautiful Italian accent!

Italian cuisine is oh so good!! As you walk through the streets of any village, town or city you will most likely smell the amazing scents that are classic to Italy – garlic, olive oil, tomatoes, pasta, wine and more. To add to our experience, I hope you will join me in cooking one of the tasty delights that are quite typical in Italy.

Warren Egnal, owner of DouxVin, will also be sharing about the beautiful country and winelands of Italy. We will be tasting 2 wines from northern Italy (that some of you ordered) under the guidance of Warren. If you thought the wines from South Africa and Portugal were tasty, just wait until you sample the wines from Italy. They will be a feast for the eyes and the palate.

😎 European River Cruising – from Home! 🍷

WOW!  What a night!  Last Thursday I hosted more than 40 friends for the 1st of 3 Virtual Travel and Wine Tasting Events and it was a hit!  Below you’ll see how much fun we had and hear the details for our next tour this Thursday.

We boarded our safari cruisers and explored South Africa and Uganda.  You can’t help but notice these countries are filled with adventure, beauty, wildlife, breathtaking scenery and sun-soaked coasts. Who wants to see this firsthand?  I know I am ready!

So, here’s your chance!! I am excited to take a group of 10-12 adventurous travelers to South Africa in June of 2022. It’s going to be spectacular! We will be visiting Kruger National Park (Get your cameras ready! Keep your eyes peeled for animal sightings!!), Victoria Falls (Breathtaking!), Cape Town (hanging with the locals for some memorable experiences), the wine lands (tasty!), safari cruising and so much more. If you are interested in joining the fun, let me know right away as space is now limited.

Are you ready for our next adventure? I am!! This Thursday, June 25th at 8 PM EDT we will be venturing on a river cruise! River cruises are the hot bucket list vacation right now for several good reasons. 1) River cruising is on smaller ships that sail on rivers, not oceans. 2) They voyage on the inland waterways—rivers—of Europe, Asia, Egypt and the Americas. 3) They stop at river ports: often the region’s oldest and most colorful towns. I can’t wait to share with you some really amazing destinations that can be explored through river cruising.

I think one of the highlights of river cruising is the opportunity to explore the charming, historical towns and cities in the various ports. In some areas, a river may even be the only access. This means that we as travelers get to travel directly into the heart of small villages and get an insider’s view of exotic locales otherwise hard to reach. Some of my most memorable traveling experiences are when I hung out with the locals and learned more about their culture and heritage through their eyes.

Because river cruises have fewer passengers, the vessels are able to procure a treasure trove of local produce, seafood and meat for onboard meals – food is often fresher and more regionally inspired. So, to add to our experience, I hope you will join me in cooking one of the tasty delights that are offered on an AmaWaterways River Cruise. Wait until you see some of the options. They look incredible! Please click here and register so I can send them to you.

Warren Egnal, owner of DouxVin, will also be sharing about the beautiful country and winelands of Portugal. We will be tasting 2 wines from the Douro Valley (that some of you ordered) under the guidance of Warren. If you thought the African wines were tasty, just wait until you sample the wines from Portugal. They will be a feast for the eyes and the palate.

If this is your first time seeing this information, no worries, let me explain: You can travel with us virtually to these next 2 fabulous destinations (Portugal and Italy) and listen in on the wine tasting. All you have to do is RVSP (Click Here) to me that you want to attend, and I will send you a Zoom Video link.

Memorial Day: The Ultimate Sacrifice

“The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.”    —Jeff Miller

Memorial Day always brings a tear to my eye as I often reflect on the visible impact Arlington National Cemetery has had on thousands of the middle school children that I’ve been blessed to take on tour to our Nation’s Capital. It is a special place – solemn and heart-breaking, but beautiful and inspiring too!

Here is a video from one of my recent educational tours to Washington, DC where the students had the honor of participating in the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – a very somber and emotional moment, yet very inspiring as these young adults and those who watched paid their respects.

I honestly believe if everyone had the opportunity to visit the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery and reflect on the 400,000 men and women buried there who served their country so honorably, many having paid the ultimate sacrifice, our country would be an even better place.

As I continue to focus on Washington, DC as a family friendly destination, Arlington National Cemetery is a national treasure, a must see, and is suitable for the entire family to visit.

Everywhere you go, you are reminded of the events, and the heroes involved, that changed the course of history of the United States. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of the most reverent sites. The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place every hour and is done with a solemn precision that adds dignity and respect to the fallen soldier.

You will also see many different memorials, like the one of those who perished in our space program. You will see a special section dedicated to those who have served on the Supreme Court. You’ll see the grave sites of civil rights leaders who gave their lives for the cause of freedom for African Americans.

And you will see grave sites of friends and family members from your communities.

You’ll see generals buried next to privates and both will have nothing more than the simple, but elegant, grave marker provided by the government. From President Kennedy’s gravesite, and the eternal flame, you can look up and see the home of General Robert E Lee and then turn around and see the magnificent and majestic view of Washington, D.C. and the United States Capitol building.

There are funerals almost every day and there’s a good chance you will see a caisson and horses that are mounted by impeccably dressed soldiers moving through the cemetery going to or coming from a burial.

Memorial Day in the United States is far more than a three-day weekend or the unofficial start of summer. It is a time to reflect and pay respect to those that have given their lives for our freedom.

A Tasty Challenge!

Are you up for a challenge…a tasty challenge! I know many of us have been cooking at home more often than normal and you may be running out of ideas. One thing about traveling is that you have the opportunity to taste a variety of flavors and foods from countries all over the world. And cruise ships are also in that same boat! They offer a wide variety of eateries from diners to specialty restaurants and many of the menus are quite tasty. With the various choices, it’s possible to not have the same foods more than once.

I thought it would be a great idea to share this fun, new challenge so you can cook along with me at home and try your hand at some favorite Cruise Line recipes, since we can’t actually cruise right now. That’s why I’m inviting you to join me in a Cooking Challenge. So, strap on an apron, turn on some music and let’s head to the kitchen…. kids included! And best of all – let’s relieve some stress by having fun in the kitchen.

This delicious recipe is complements of Oceania Cruises (known for their amazing cuisine) – and was created by the famous chef Jacques Pépin. It’s his scrumptious Roasted Chicken. It’s National Travel Advisor Day!

Today is National Travel Advisor Day and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my clients, friends, family, travel buddies and my host agency, Gifted Travel Network, for the support I have received over the years. You have helped me grow my business to what it is today. So, from the bottom of my heart…THANK YOU for trusting me to be your Travel Advisor!!

There is nothing more rewarding for a travel advisor than receiving kind words from happy travelers. It is heartwarming to know that we have partnered together to create lifelong memories through your travel experiences. I love seeing your pictures while you are on your adventures and I always look forward to working with you to plan your next vacation. After all, “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”

Did you know that Travel Advisor Day is also part of National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) — America’s annual salute to travel and tourism? It’s a time when travel and tourism professionals across the country unite to celebrate the value travel holds for our economy, businesses and personal well-being.

NTTW was created by Congress in 1983 to highlight the economic power of travel in the U.S. This year’s theme, “the Spirit of Travel” is extra special because it arrives at an opportune moment to unite the industry, celebrate its indomitable spirit and elevate the role it will play in America’s economic and employment recovery.

Although I will celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week and Travel Advisor Day virtually, I look forward to the day that my clients are out and about exploring a new destination, enriched by what they see, hear, taste and smell.

XOOM Tours’ happy travelers out exploring our wonderful world!

I cannot wait to travel again and have booked a trip to Africa towards the end of this year. Many of my clients have also rescheduled travel that was interrupted to later this year and next year. I feel so inspired every time I look at these pictures. If you feel similarly inspired, I am here to help you make it happen!

#1 in 2020 – Washington, D.C.

Earlier this year the New York Times ranked Washington, D.C. as the #1 place to travel in 2020. For me, it’s in my top 5. Here’s why! I lived and worked there for a few years during the 80’s, have taken my family on vacation there a number of times and have been taking large groups of middle school students 2-3 times a year for the past 15 years. It’s an ever changing, vibrant, family friendly, fun city where you get to see our government in action, and actually enjoy learning about the history and culture of our great nation. And this year is particularly exciting being an election year. Can you tell I love Washington, D.C.!

No other city offers so many places that interest young people. From the many Smithsonian’s, to the U.S. Capitol, the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, to the Presidential Monuments and War Memorials to Arlington National Cemetery and the various hands-on museums, this city is alive with a wealth of information! Over the years I’ve researched and experienced so much! I can make your trip to the Nation’s Capital your most memorable trip ever. So, pack up the family — It’s time to discover the real DC!

Proud to be an American!

One of the highlights of my work is taking students on the road to explore, learn and visit new destinations. Washington, DC is perfect for kids because they have the opportunity to experience first-hand what they learn in their Social Studies, Humanities, English and Science classes. Last month, I led another group of 8th graders around our Nation’s Capital. Our itinerary was action packed! We visited several highlights, with a few insider surprises and fun along the way. For many of my students, it was their first visit to DC. They were thrilled and energized as they watched their history, science and literature lessons come alive!

Over the next few weeks, I will highlight some of the wonderful sites in and around DC. So let’s begin with the beautiful and historical Government Buildings.

Our first stop…the United States Capitol. We had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Ted Budd, a representative from our state of North Carolina. He shared about his role as an elected official, provided an update as to what’s going on in our government and explained how it would impact those of us in North Carolina.

After our meet and greet, we checked out the statues in Emancipation Hall and then saw a brief orientation film titled “E Pluribus Unum – Out of Many, One”, which describes how we have come together as a nation to govern ourselves. Then our guide, referred to as a “Red Coat”, walked us through the corridors where we visited the Rotunda under the great dome, National Statuary Hall, the Crypt and the original House and Senate chambers. Our guide provided fun facts and interesting stories about the Capitol.

The U.S. Capitol is an impressive 540-room building with its familiar grand dome that is not only a magnificent symbol of freedom that is over 200 years old, but it also houses the working offices of our Senators and Representatives. This is the place where they meet to make the laws that govern our country.

Fun Fact #1:

Did you know the Capitol building has its own mini-metro system? It is quite unique and one of the world’s shortest transit systems. It takes you between the Capitol Building and the Russell Senate Office building.

  • Tours of the U.S. Capitol can be scheduled in advance on the Capitol Visitor Center website or through the office of one of your senators or your representative. They are held Monday-Saturday from 8:30am-4:30pm.

Fun Fact #2:

Did you know you can go on a guided tour of the Capitol Dome? The tour route includes approximately 300 steps to reach the top of the Dome. It starts out straight then becomes narrow, a little bit steep, then curvy and spiraly. Are you feeling energized to climb 300 steps?

  • Tours can be arranged through members of Congress or directly through the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center.
  • Tours are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and last between 45-60 minutes. One (1) tour per hour is available.
  • Group size is limited to the Guide, the Member, plus a maximum of seven (7) guests.
  • Weather-permitting, the Guide will take Dome Tour groups to the balcony beneath the Statue of Freedom. Now that would be a really cool experience, right?!

The White House

One of the highlights of our trip is to take a group picture in front of the White House. Yes, all 165 of us gathered in front for that souvenir photo! I usually ask a tourist to take the photo hoping they will agree. One year a woman from Kentucky agreed but she asked if her nephew’s character “Flat Stanley” could join in on our photo! Of course, I told her!! And so…snap…she took the group picture along with “Flat Stanley”. Quite memorable for sure!

The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. It’s quite impressive both inside and out. My husband and I visited the inside a few years ago and saw the beautiful formal reception rooms, each furnished in a different historical period (including the Green Room in Federal Style, the Red Room in the Empire style of 1810-1830, and the Blue Room in the period of James Monroe). We also saw the chandelier-bedecked East Room that’s used for official receptions, the formal dining room that seats up to 140 people, the Library, and the China Room.

If you would like to visit the White House, requests can be submitted through a member of Congress or International embassy. It’s best to visit with a few people or in a small group rather than a large group like ours.

  • Tours are Tuesday-Thursday from 7:30am-11:30am and Friday-Saturday from 7:30am-1:30pm
  • Tour requests can be submitted up to three months in advance and no less than 21 days in advance.
  • Government-issued ID is required for everyone 18 and older.

The Supreme Court

The Supreme Court Building is majestic in size and rich in ornamentation. It serves as both home to the nation’s highest Court and the manifest symbol of its importance as a coequal, independent branch of government. When court is not in session, visitors can take free, self-guided tours of the Supreme Court. Docents give courtroom lectures every 30-minutes from 9:30-3:30pm on weekdays when the court is not in session. I have found the “lectures’ to be quite interesting and informative. Visitors are also invited to attend oral arguments when court is in session. These seats are extremely limited. Visitors must wait in line the morning of a courtroom session. Did you know there is 1 lawyer for every 19 residents in Washington, DC? Now that’s a lot of lawyers in one area!

  • The Supreme Court is open Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:30pm.

Fun Fact #3:

The U.S. Supreme Court has always been known as the “Highest Court of the Land,” but there is one more court that sits even above the Supreme Court. Can you guess what it is? Yep – a basketball court!! Who knew! The basketball court is on the fifth floor of the building and the actual courtroom is located on the fourth floor. The court was once a spare room to house journals, but sometime in the 1940’s it was converted into a workout area for courthouse workers. Wooden backboards and baskets were installed later, which led to the current use of a basketball court used by clerks, off-duty police officers and other supreme court employees.

The Library of Congress

Now this building is a beauty! Once you enter the Great Hall you can’t help but notice the statues, marble staircases, the paintings on the walls and ceiling and the beautiful stained glass skylights. The Library of Congress happens to be the biggest and most beautiful library in the world. Incredible! Many of the statues represent either art, commerce, philosophy, history, law, poetry, religion or science.

Next, head to the third floor to see the spectacular columned and domed 160-foot high Main Reading Room, whose stained glass windows hold the seals of 45 states of the period. A favorite attraction is the Thomas Jefferson Library, opened in 1897 and named for the president whose own 6,487 books were the foundation of the collection – there’s even a replica of Jefferson’s personal library on the premises. The library’s collections cover just about everything: presidential papers, manuscripts, books, music, videos, web pages, even comic books. (Over 100,000 of them!) It takes three buildings to hold it all.

Guided tours are quite informative and worth it. During peak seasons, special family tours may be available for kids age 6 to 14. Ask at the ground floor visitors’ desk about current tours and exhibits. Excellent activity sheets for children can be downloaded in advance to enhance the tour. Storytime for toddlers takes place Fridays at 10:30am in the Young Readers’ Center on the ground floor.

  • The Library of Congress is open Monday-Saturday, 8:30am-4:30pm

Fun Fact #4:

There is a tunnel that connects the Library of Congress to the Visitors Center of the Capitol building. This is an easy way to go between these 2 buildings without having to exit to the outside and go back through security a second time.

Fun Fact #5:

Did you know there is a copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling in Braille in the Young Readers Center on the ground floor? Our students are always fascinated when they get to touch this book. This center also has other Harry Potter books translated in different languages. Children, teens, and their families are encouraged to visit the Young Readers Center and participate in hands-on activities related to the Library of Congress and its collections in this room.

I love taking students to Washington D.C. It is also a fun and educational destination for families. It’s a city steeped in the sciences, from natural to political, culture, arts and history, and there’s no better place to make the most of your time with your kids. Get out, explore, and see just how many activities on our bucket list you can cross off before childhood whizzes by. I am here ready & waiting to help you make it happen!

7 Things I am Grateful For!

I “get it”!  This was not the Easter or Passover holiday that we are used to.  Families were unable to go to services in their spring finest and, instead, attended virtual religious services online.  The Easter Bunny still found most families with young children, but the baskets were possibly not quite as overflowing, and egg hunts were in your own backyard. Seder dinner tables were set – sometimes for only one or two people.  But you know what?  It’s all perfect.

We are doing what we need to be doing right now.  And we are fortunate to have that option. It’s easy to get caught up in everything that couldn’t happen, but today I want us to take the opportunity to be grateful for what IS happening all around us.  Grateful for all of those now famous “essential workers” who are out there keeping us safe, healthy and stocked up.

1.) I am grateful for the entire medical community.  Hats off to the doctors, nurses, other health care professionals, custodial staff members who keep hospital rooms clean and disinfected, hospital management teams, IT employees who keep the charting & computers online, EMTs, ambulance drivers, cafeteria workers…. I could go on and on!

2.) I am grateful for the grocery/drug store employees.  And that includes actual store workers AND delivery drivers who keep our stores stocked to the best of their abilities, who often risk their own health to serve us as consumers, and probably put up with more ugly behavior than they should.  Give them grace!  And a cheerful smile and a BIG thank you!

3.) I am grateful for the delivery services.  USPS, UPS, Amazon, Fedex & DHL drivers are working in overtime.  The folks in the warehouses are working tirelessly to ensure that we all receive whatever we have ordered today, whether it be a necessity or a luxury.  And, of course, the Door Dash, GrubHub, PostMates, UberEats, Shipt and Instacart drivers who deliver food to our front door when we get too burned out to make it ourselves – or want to support local restaurants during this crazy time.

4.) Speaking of restaurants, I am grateful that I can still enjoy my favorite restaurant cuisine just by ordering, paying and showing up!  The local restaurant communities are totally showing up for us and we should support them by ordering take out whenever possible.  Even the large chain restaurants employ local people, so don’t completely boycott them!

5.) I am grateful for the local utility workers who pick up my garbage on schedule, keep my internet signal strong so I can work from home and ensure that we are hunkered down in comfortable homes with gas, electricity & cable TV.

6.) I am grateful for all the “helpers” who are shopping for friends who aren’t comfortable leaving their homes, sewing masks, mowing neighbors’ lawns, sending a positive Facebook message, picking up the phone and just generally caring.  If anything good comes of this whole situation, I hope that we will value kindness in our society more.

7.) Finally, I am grateful for YOU!  While we are obviously not able to travel right now, this too shall pass.  And, I’m grateful for this community I have built of travel prospects, clients and friends who all share the dream of exploring the world as soon as it is safe again.  And it will be.

I’d love to hear what you are grateful for.  When you have a moment, reply to my email.

Your patience, support and flexibility have truly been a blessing during this very trying time in my entrepreneurial journey and I thank you all!

COMMUNITY IMMUNITY!

Group of friends on Hvar Island, Croatia
Hvar Island, Croatia

Immunity is defined as “resistance to or protection against a specified disease; power to resist infection”.  When the body is exposed to a disease or toxin that it has never seen before, the immune system kicks in and produces antibodies to help combat the illness and protect the system from future infections of the same disease.  It’s an amazing thing, but that isn’t the focus of my message this week.

Besides the invasion of the COVID-19 virus, we are also being challenged by another unknown toxin – isolation. It’s ironic that one of the main solutions to curbing the spread of the virus is to isolate, yet the side effects of that are taking their toll on our communities.  So how can we build some strong “Community Immunity” to combat the spread of isolation? Here are some of my thoughts:

Lisa and Allan in Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu

Even if your body has to stay home right now, your imagination doesn’t!  As a travel professional, I am doing my best to provide my community of past, present & future clients with inspiration so you can continue to dream about your future journeys.  Have you always dreamed of going on an African Safari? Do some research, watch some videos, read some travel books about this experience/destination. Talk with your immediate family about their travel bucket-lists…you might be surprised to learn that your teenage kids have always dreamed of seeing Machu Picchu.  When this is all over, let’s get planning and make those dreams come true.

Be generous with your actions in your own neighborhood community. Regularly check-in on neighbors who live alone.  If you are venturing out to the grocery store or pharmacy or bank, ask if anyone needs anything.  Bake 2 lasagnas or loaves of bread instead of 1 and share. Don’t purchase and hoard supplies that you really don’t need.  Be kind and generous to your neighborhood “essential” workers who are risking their own well being to provide the services you are using.  Your kids are homeschooling…brainstorm ways that they can contribute to the community, it is the most important lesson they may learn from this.

Hands showing the letter LOVE
LOVE!

Stay in touch with your family via video chat or Zoom-type calls. These days, the average family is spread out all across the country.  Coordinate a regular video call with far-reaching family members to catch up and see how everyone is doing.  Take turns sharing funny stories and reminiscing about past events. Plan for future visits or multi-generational vacations you would love to take.  Family is the most important community that we all have yet it is easy to take for granted. Don’t! Create new memories now that you will talk about in years to come.

So, how will you help to build your own “community immunity”? I hope that this has given you a head start on developing your own antibodies to the isolation and separation toxins that social distancing has thrust upon us. I’d love to hear how you are keeping the dream alive in your own home and your community. Soon we will be back to “normal” and I’m hoping that it will be an even better “normal” than before – where we have more appreciation for each other and our incredible freedoms to see the world.

Remember, I am here to help you make your travel dreams come true.

MOVE FORWARD AS AN INSPIRATION TO OTHERS!

Everyone is facing a temporary “new normal” right now and the biggest issue may be feeling like you have lost control of your life and the freedoms we typically take for granted. That is totally understandable!

What is important right now is to recognize what you can and can’t control. Let the “Can’ts” go and focus on the “Cans”. I’ve started a list here to get you started…what are some of your own suggestions? Reply to this newsletter with how you are letting go of what you can’t control and moving forward as an inspiration to others…

I CAN’T CONTROL:

  • whether or not others follow the rules of social distancing, but I CAN be sure that I, and my immediate family, follow CDC recommendations. The sooner we contain this virus, the sooner “normal” will return.
  • the actions and attitudes of others, but I CAN control my own actions and be sure that they are being tempered with a little extra kindness, generosity and grace.
  • the amount of toilet paper on the grocery store shelves, but I CAN choose to only take what I need and not hoard that or any other important supplies so that others can have access as well.
  • the sensationalism and constant barrage of negative news stories that incite anxiety, but I CAN control what I see by limiting my exposure to updates from a trusted source and filtering out all the chatter. Turn off the TV news!
  • when schools will open again, but I CAN do the best that I can to be sure my kids have some structure, good nutrition, a reasonable schedule, time to play, creative projects and lots of attention & love. Children get anxious too and they look to us for cues.
  • how long this will last, but I CAN choose to be a part of the solution and stay well by socially distancing, hydrating, exercising, eating healthily, resting and finding fun things to do at home. This too shall pass, and you want to be in better shape when it does than even before!
  • not being able to physically hang out with friends, coworkers and family members, but I CAN keep socially networking using video chats, emails, thoughtful social media posts, and telephone calls. Our bodies may be isolated, but our souls need connection, so keep reaching out in more creative ways.
  • the restrictions on travel right now, but I CAN provide you with inspiration so that you keep your dreams alive. The time will come when you can take that trip that you have been wanting to take, and I will be here ready & waiting to help you make it happen!

IT’S MOVIE NIGHT!

It's Movie Night

“Stay home and hunker down” are not words that I, as a travel professional AND world traveler, ever thought I would give as advice. However, with the current COVID-19 situation and the need to be responsible, I totally understand that we all must socially distance ourselves and our family to help reduce the impact of this new virus.

But, while I am willingly advising people to not travel under the current circumstances, I feel very strongly that we will all get through this together and the world will once again open its arms to receive curious visitors. So, it is vitally important to keep on DREAMING about your next vacation or adventure.

Titanic Vacation

Since we are staying home and schools, restaurants, gyms, retail stores and more are now closed, I thought it might be fun to recommend some of my favorite travel-themed movies that can easily be found with the many streaming services that are out there. What better way to spend a couple of hours by yourself, with your spouse or with the whole family watching together, dreaming together and getting inspiration for your next trip?

  1. Mamma Mia (2008) & Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (2018) – based on the wildly successful Broadway musical with a score from ABBA, this story tracks the lovely story of Donna and her daughter Sophie as they both grow and learn from the past
  2. Eat, Pray, Love (2010) – A married woman realizes how unhappy her marriage really is, and that her life needs to go in a different direction. After a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey to “find herself” in Italy, India & Bali.
  3. P.S., I Love You (2007) – A young widow discovers that her late husband has left her messages intended to help ease her pain and start a new life. Ireland is the star!
  4. Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) – Based on the book by Frances Mayes, the film is about a recently divorced writer who buys a villa in Tuscany on a whim, hoping it will lead to a change in her life. The beauty of Cortona and the Italian people are featured.
  5. Letters to Juliet (2010) – traveling to Verona, Italy with her busy fiancé, a young American journalist gets involved in an adventure based on a love letter a tourist left at the monument to Romeo & Juliet’s unrequited love.
  6. The Way (2010) – An American father takes the journey on the Camino del Santiago to understand what happened with his son, who died while attempting the journey himself. The beauty of France and Spain is prominently featured.
  7. National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985) – Just for giggles, follow the Griswold family through their comedic adventures in France, Italy & Germany. Because we all need a laugh right now!
  8. Titanic (1997) – An epic, action-packed romance set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic; the pride and joy of the White Star Line and, at the time, the largest moving object ever built.

And especially for the kids (but parents will like these too!):

  1. Brave (Disney) – A great adventure story based in Scotland that also teaches girls that they don’t need that handsome prince to be awesome.
  2. Moana (Disney) – The young daughter of the village chief discovers her calling and purpose by rescuing her Hawaiian island from an angry goddess, with the entertaining help of the demigod Maui.
  3. Ratatouille (Disney) – In Paris, a rat name Remy longs to become a French chef. He befriends a young restaurant worker, Linguini, and “mentors” his human friend in the ways of preparing fine cuisine.
  4. The Sound of Music – Need I say more? The adventures of the Von Trapp family and their nanny, Maria, set in pre-WW II Austria. A classic!
  5. Madeline: Lost in Paris – A young schoolgirl in Paris embarks on many misadventures that cause her fellow students and teachers many headaches. Based on the book series.

So, pop some popcorn and cozy up on the couch and start dreaming! This social distancing thing is looking better already!

When the world calms down and you are ready to turn your new travel dreams into reality, I am here to make it effortless for you…Keep on Traveling!!!
