🍲🍠 Let’s Feast…Peruvian Style! 🥣🥘

Why do you like to travel?

Do you like to discover new things? Or do you travel to learn more about yourself and the world around you? Or is it because you like being exposed to new places, people, cultures? Travel is a great way to develop a wider world view. It helps to open our mind…to realize there is no one way to live life. This is what makes our world a beautiful place!

When I travel, I not only want to “see” a destination, but I want to experience it. I like to smell, hear, taste and feel it. And this is why immersive travel allows us to dive headfirst into the experiences that allow us to do just that, and so much more.

Peru was one of my bucket list destinations and I am so glad I had the opportunity to experience the sights, sounds, sensations and flavors up close and personal with a group of friends! From Lima, to Cusco to the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu and more…it is a magical country that is steeped in tradition, culture, music, art and fabulous cuisine!

Most often we think of Machu Picchu when talking about Peru. Yes, that is one of the major highlights and rightly so. But a visit to awe-inspiring Machu Picchu isn’t the only way to explore the Incan culture. When traveling to Peru, there is no meal more traditional than pachamanca. This is a fabulous feast to celebrate the blessings of Pachamama and the historic significance is profound.

Pachamanca is a Peruvian specialty that dates back to Inca Empire. The term pachamanca in Quechua is a combination of “pacha”: earth and “manca”: cook pot; thus, “cook pot of the earth”. However, in the south’s Aymara language, “manca” is food, so then: “earth food”.  Both interpretations clearly demonstrate the concept.

Although this tradition is commonly prepared in the Andes, it can also be found in other areas across Peru. It is more than just a style of cooking- it is a communal social rite in which eaters enjoy delectable vegetables and meats that have gathered the energy of the earth, from Pachamama, the Earth Mother. No other style of cooking shows such a strong connection to the forces of nature.

The tradition of pachamanca is deeply rooted in Andean cultures even today. To celebrate the harvest and give thanks to Pachamama for blessing the earth, the food is returned to the earth to be cooked and the participants of the celebration eat from the earth.

It takes about 3 hours to cook everything…so settle in, because it’ll be a while before the feast is ready! The preparation starts by digging a large hole in the ground. The large hole serves as the cooking pit and is called a huatia. Next, you’ll gather rocks to heat over the flame; be careful to only choose volcanic stone that can withstand intense heat. Then, the hot rocks will be spread inside the pit to create an oven effect.

What will you be feasting on? The food will be added to the oven in layers—tough root vegetables on the bottom, banana-wrapped meat next, with corn, beans and additional hot rocks on top. The ingredients included in the feast may vary depending on the region of Peru, but no matter where you are, the cooking of pachamanca is a way of honoring Pachamama, the earth goddess or mother earth.

Today, Pachamanca is the centerpiece of many Peruvian gatherings, whether it be a local holiday in the Andes or a party in the highlands just outside of Lima. It’s a great way to feed a crowd, and reiterates the important tie between food, ritual, and people in Peruvian culture.

I’m sure you are wondering how it tasted!  Absolutely delicious!!! Now it’s time for you to experience Peru in an authentic way like we did so you can check it off your bucket list!

If you want your 2020 “Vacation Do Over”, let’s start planning your next adventure now! Peru included!!!

There will be limited availability in 2021 because many people “lifted and shifted” their vacation from this year.

🚘 📷Do GO Chasing Waterfalls!🌄📷

Michael and Lisa, September 2020

While those old song lyrics say, ‘don’t go chasing waterfalls,’ in North Carolina, it’s best to ignore this bit of advice and DO go chasing them. North Carolina has no shortage of waterfalls and amazing hikes to go along with them, ranging from falls that reach hundreds of feet to mild and temperate cascades with gentle swimming holes.

Waterfalls are a beautiful natural attraction in our little slice of North Carolina. The scenery of a waterfall is a great reward after a long trip to the mountains, or a long hike to get to your destination, and they are so worth it.

There are many fantastic waterfalls near Asheville, NC and throughout the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Favorite waterfalls appear along hiking trails, several roadside cascades, and can even be seen from the car.

We recently discovered 10 gems in the Western Carolinas. Sometimes the best kept secrets are right out our back yards. Take a look at the beauty that surrounds you! It’s everywhere!

SOCO FALLS and MINGO FALLS

There are two spectacular waterfalls on the Cherokee Indian Reservation!!

Double waterfalls are a rarity and this one is a hidden gem. Soco Falls (above left), located just a short walk off the main road, is a perfect way to start your scenic adventure. The falls sit right in between Maggie Valley and the Cherokee Indian Reservation.

Mingo Falls (above right) – meaning “Big Bear” in the Cherokee Language is located in the Big Cove community just north of Cherokee. A hidden gem hiding in the Smokies, the beautiful Mingo Falls is accessed by a short and brisk 0.4-mile hike inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Cherokee Indian Reservation. The 120-foot fall is always impressive, but especially after a large rainfall which causes the cascade to flow in full force.

JUNEY WHANK, TOM BRANCH and INDIAN CREEK FALLS

The Deep Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is known for its streams, hiking trails and waterfalls and is a beautiful area of the park. It is home to 3 waterfalls – Juney Whank, Tom Branch and Indian Creek Falls. There are two loop trails that take you to all three: Three Waterfalls Loop (2.4 miles) and Deep Creek-Indian Creek Loop (5 miles).  This is a popular area for tubing and gets quite busy during the summer months.

Tom Branch (above left) is located in the Deep Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  It is a simple, but gorgeous waterfall, that gently falls into the famous Deep Creek.  It’s the first waterfall you will encounter on the loop.  It is enjoyable to watch tubers go past the bottom of the falls.  You have a good view from across the creek.

Juney Whank Falls (above center) is divided into an upper and lower section. Both can be viewed from the footbridge which crosses Juney Whank Branch at the falls. Together they drop 90 feet from top to bottom. The stream and falls are said to be named after a Mr. Junaluska “Juney” Whank, who may be buried in the area.

Indian Creek Falls (above right) is the largest of the three waterfalls in the Deep Creek section of Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  The trail to the falls is wide, paved and mostly flat. You may want to sit for a while and enjoy the sound of the rushing water!

CULLASAJA Falls

CULLASAJA FALLS

Cullasaja Falls can be seen from the roadside on US Highway 64 (called Mountain Waters Scenic Highway & Waterfall Byway), 8.8 miles west of Highlands, along a very narrow, curvy stretch of highway through the the Cullasaja River Gorge in Nantahala National Forest. What a beautiful cliffside drive!

BRIDAL VEIL FALLS

On the way to the Highlands, we spotted at beautiful sight, Bridal Veil Falls.  It has been famous for generations as the only waterfall in North Carolina you can drive behind. However, the section of road behind the falls is now blocked off from automobiles for safety. This allows you to walk behind and enjoy it more. (The picture on the left was taken when I stood underneath the falls.) The 60-ft. waterfall in Nantahala National Forest doesn’t have a large volume of water unless it is right after a big rain. Therefore, it is safe and fun to stand behind it!

DRY FALLS

Dry Falls, a popular waterfall located a few miles outside of Highlands, gives you the rare treat of walking safely behind a waterfall. This 75-ft. tall waterfall in the Nantahala National Forest, flows over a cliff, allowing you to walk behind the falls and stay dry (hence the name). During rainy spells when the water volume is higher, the spray will prevent you from staying totally dry.

GLEN Falls

GLEN FALLS (a triple waterfall)

What a gorgeous place to view! Glen Falls is a triple waterfall near Highlands with 4 scenic stops along a 2-mile hike. The upper and middle cascades are the most beautiful. These falls are a great way to spend time in the woods relaxing and taking in the views!

Michael, Allan and Lisa

If you love to find waterfalls, then Western North Carolina is the place for you!!  Travel still remains one of the BEST ways to feel a global interconnectedness with humanity and in this case…nature!

😎🌍Where are BEAUTIFUL Turquoise Seas & Fairy-tale Architecture? ✈🌎

That’s CROATIA!

WOW!  What a night!!  We had a fabulous time visiting Portugal (virtually) last Thursday evening!  My friend, Jordi Vilaseca, came to us LIVE from Europe and took us on an amazing tour with breathtaking photos! What a beautiful country!

Portugal is filled with exciting history, beautiful tile, cobblestone villages, idyllic scenery, medieval castles, captivating cities and golden beaches. It is also known for fabulous wine (particularly Port Wine) and gastronomy.  It’s all about bringing the land and landscape into every dish.  What a fantastic combination!!

Are you ready to visit Portugal?  Megan and I loved our adventure there and can’t wait to return!

Next Up:  CROATIA!

Croatia is BEAUTIUFL! Croatia is BREATHTAKING!

With piercing turquoise seas and fairytale-like architecture, there is no denying Croatia is breathtakingly beautiful!

Spanning most of the Adriatic Sea, you’re never too far away from the coast when traveling in Croatia.  And even if it’s not pretty beaches you seek, stone castles, magnificent waterfalls, UNESCO sites, and fabulous hiking await travelers of all kinds!

Here are 2 Highlights…

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, an ancient walled city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of my all-time favorite cities…. truly charming! It is filled with medieval stone buildings, churches, wonderful restaurants and boutique shops. You will also find the oldest pharmacy in Europe within the city walls. It is still operating today, and people come from all over the world to purchase their natural skin creams that are made from local herbs!

Plitvice Lakes National Park…

Plitvice Lakes is best be described as a paradise–there’s no exaggeration needed! From crystal clear blue seas and rushing waterfalls that belong on a postcard, Plitvice Lakes is the ultimate fairytale destination. It is made up of 16 lakes that are connected by a series of waterfalls surrounded by picture-perfect woodlands. Plitvice Lakes was the inspiration for my group tour in September, 2019 and I am so glad we saw it in person.

While recent events have kept us off planes and, well, on our couch, travel still remains one of the BEST ways to feel a global interconnectedness with humanity.

So, let’s use the power of our minds along with local destination specialist, Zvonimir from Croatia, as he joins us to bring this destination alive with a compelling visual presentation along with Q&A.

Warren Egnal, from DouxVin, will be sharing his expertise on wines that we’ll be tasting from a few regions. The experience will truly touch all your senses.

HERE’S THE PLAN FOR THE LAST TOUR IN OUR SERIES #2:

We have one last Virtual Travel Tour and Wine Tasting that remains.  We’ll use the Zoom Video Platform to present CROATIA along with 1 white and 1 red wine from the country.  Not a wine drinker, no worries.  Join us to be inspired by this amazing destination, with fun and laughter along the way.

Our final tour is to Croatia on Tuesday, September 15th at 8 PM EDT, 5 PM PDT with Zvonimir Androic, Founder of Via Tours Croatia, LIVE from Zagreb, Croatia.

A fabulous experience…

Here are Highlights of the Wine

CROATIA

(1) Vie di Romans Flors de Uis and (1) Leone de Castris Primitivo Manduria Villa Santera

The production area for Primitivo di Manduria wines stretches eastwards from Taranto, along the Gulf of Taranto coast.

The vineyards are located in a niche microclimate that benefits from soil rich in alluvial fans and minerals that have been carried there by glaciers over the millennia, as well as, the Bora winds from the east that result in large, daily temperature fluctuations. Flors di Uis is a fantasy term that in the Friulano dialect means “flowering of the grapes” and recalls the sweet, floral fragrance of the grapevine blossoms.

I, along with our special guest speaker Zvonimir Androic (affectionately known as “Z”), look forward to sharing insights and tastes from this wonderful destination.

If you have any questions about our event or future travel adventures, please feel free to reach out to me and to Warren for any questions about the wine.

Looking forward to seeing you on September 15th!

In the meantime, take care, wash your hands and stay healthy.
